St. Peter's
History
St Peter's is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. Originally founded in the 16th century as a Portuguese trading and fishing post under the name Santo Pedro, the site was taken over by France in the 1630s and renamed Saint-Pierre.
In 1650, the merchant Nicholas Denys took control of Saint-Pierre and promoted the fur trade with the Mi'kmaq. He also used the isthmus as a transport route for sailing ships between the Bras d'Or Lake and the Atlantic Ocean.
In the early 19th century, the village of St Peter's was founded and local residents improved the existing Haulover Road to facilitate the transport of sailing ships. A feasibility study for a canal was completed in 1825 and construction of the St Peter's Canal began in 1854. 15 years of construction later, the canal opened in 1869, marking the beginning of the industrial age on Cape Breton Island.
